With a leading role in Harry Potter, a modelling career, a work to promote girls’ education, the He For She Campaign, there is no doubt that her name, work and face isn’t unknown for any of you. Indeed, the 24-year-old young woman has recently taken the N°1 spot on the AskMen Top 99 Outstanding Women of 2015.

Revealed when she was only an 8-year-old little girl, she rapidly became a child-star with her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies. Accumulating money and fame, she could have gone crazy as so many other children-star did before her. But instead of drug, alcohol or money problems, she turned towards her career as an actress, and even extended it by becoming a model and an activist.
Her career as a model shoot off when she was only 15 and became the youngest star to appear on the cover of Teen Vogue. It was followed with partnerships with various brands such as Burberry, Lancôme or People Tree.
It was more recently that she decided to get involve in the defence of human rights. It started with the promotion of girls’ education in 2014, for which she travelled to Bangladesh and Zambia. Her implication and the use of her fame to make the good led her to be appointed as the UN Women Ambassador.

The 8-year-old, who played the courageous, loyal and excessively moral wizard, finally grew up to be similar to her fictional character. With her nomination to represent UN Women, she launched a Campaign that you have without any doubt encountered in the past year.
In September 2014, the world saw a nervous Emma standing up to face some of the most powerful leader of the modern world, and launch her campaign He For She. The movement aim to end gender inequality and empower women, through actions involving both women and men.
Her speech at the UN Headquarters in New York received extremely various reactions, if the public of the speech applauded her; she also admitted receiving threats. As the campaign was discovered by the public, it became viral on social medias, and thousands of people join her in the battle.
Her speech is one of a kind, the kind that definitely has its place among the good ones, not because of a status as an actress or a model, but because of her words. Obviously we are far away from the “I would like world peace” from beauty pageant, this is not only a wish that she is expressing, she is showing us that we can achieve a change if we all work together towards it.

She raised really important matters, not just the gender inequality, but also the problems with the term feminism, and the fact that gender inequality does not only affect women, but also men.
If you don’t understand why this speech was incredible and why she is at the top of AskMen’s ranking, then here is some of her quote from the speech that I believe can make a change in anyone’s opinion:
“When I was 8, I was confused for being called bossy because I wanted to direct the plays that we would put on for our parents, but the boys were not. When at 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media. When at 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of sports teams because they didn’t want to appear muscly. When at 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings.”
“Men, I would like to give this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. Because to date, I’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society. I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it would make them less of a man.”
“Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong. It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals.”
“If not me, then who? If not now, then when?”

If with all that you still don’t understand why she was appointed the most outstanding women, you must have missed something. It means: you should read it all over again!
